Thresholds of the Algorithmic er både en utstilling og en workshop. Fredag 8. juni, kl.19:00 åpner utstillingen første gang for publikum. Så blir den omgjort til en lukket workshop for deltakerne, som sammen skal utforske algoritmer med utgangspunkt i utstillingen og verkene i den.

Algoritmer er overalt, samtidig som de er skjult. Vi registrerer dem kanskje så vidt i utvalget av annonser og nyheter som foreslås for oss for på sosiale medier. Det er ikke så lett å forstå hvordan algoritmer fungerer, og vi aksepterer, oftest uvitende, deres analyser og beslutninger.

Også på kunstfeltet ser vi i dag en økende interesse for algoritmer. Tidligere var de forstått som abstrakte størrelser som kunne brukes til ulike formeksperimenter som genererte kunst eller musikk “av seg selv”. Men i dag er de i stadig større grad vevd inn i all kunstnerisk praksis og musikalsk komponering fra grunnen av. På samme måte som i dagliglivet har algoritmene blitt en usynlig men sentral del av den kunstneriske prosessen man lett tar for gitt.

Thresholds of the Algorithmic bringer sammen etablerte norske og internasjonale kunstnere innen digital kunst, visuell kunst, lydkunst og musikk. Sammen skal de utforske hvordan algoritmer kan brukes som verktøy, bindemiddel og formgiver i utviklingen av kunst. På utstillingen vil det vises en rekke større lydinstallasjoner, kinetiske skulpturer og performance-verk som alle utfordrer grensene – “thresholds” – for hva en algoritme kan være.

Thresholds of the Algorithmic is both an exhibition and a workshop. The exhibition will open Friday June 8th, 8 pm. It will then be converted into a private workshop for the participants, who will jointly research algorithms, using the exhibition and their works as a point of departure.

Algorithms are everywhere, simultaneously as they are concealed. We might register them in as much as we notice the selection of advertisements or news posts that are suggested to us on social media. It is not quite as easy to understand how algorithms function – we accept, often unwittingly – their analyses and conclusions.

In the art world, we also see an increasing interest in algorithms. Previously they were understood as abstract entities which could be used for formal experiments that generated art or music “by itself.” However today, to a much greater degree, they are woven into art practices and music composition as a fundamental element within the work. Similarly in daily life, algorithms have been an invisible yet central component of the creative process, which one could easily take for granted.

Thresholds of the Algorithmic gathers a group of established Norwegian and international artists within the fields of digital art, visual art, sound art and music. They will work together to research how algorithms can be used as tool, binding agent or designer in the development of art. The exhibition will show a series of large sound installations, kinetic sculptures and performance work – all of which challenge the limitations – “thresholds” – of what an algorithm can be.
