Maia Urstad (NO) ”Meanwhile, in Shanghai…”

Paul Devens (NL) “City Chase”

Lydgalleriet presents two new works of art developed through the European Sound Art Resonance network. The work draws in its own way alternates on time and simultaneity and fills two rooms in the audio gallery's temporary premises in Skostredet 16.

Maia Urstad (NO) "Meanwhile, in Shanghai ..."

In "Meanwhile, in Shanghai ...", Maia Urstad has collected details of time and place from local radio stations around the world; "23 Uhr in Deuchland, Cinco de la Manana and Madrid, Saint Johns 7:30 while 7:00 in Nova Scotia" ...

The sounds are combined with other radio-specific sounds for a sonic image; as a phonogram of a 24-hour cycle in the ether and spread over 75 radios that hang just above the floor.

The term "Universal Time" is more recent. Before the nineteenth century, when moving from one continent to another could take months, there was no need to coordinate time between different geographic locations. The introduction of standard time was related to technological development, which gave the opportunity to move faster and communicate over increasingly distant distances. Greenwich Mean Time was introduced as reference time worldwide in 1884 and served as official world time until 1972, when UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) was introduced and took over this role.

Just as the standardization of time leads to the idea of synchronization, the establishment of a universal time generates the idea of simultaneousity. Today we assume without reflecting so much about the fact that the whole world lives in one global time, in a universal existence. But - we are also connected to people who are in completely different everyday realities and surroundings.

Paul Devens (NL) "City Chase"

"City Chase" is an installation with many speakers moving on rails. The movements of the speakers recreate a Devens bike ride around the center of Bergen, where he has recorded sound while riding. He has compiled a composition of city sounds and movements that are closely linked physically. The speakers glide with each sound and create a new way to listen to famous sounds from Bergen.

Paul Devens comes from the Netherlands and is educated at ABK and Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. He works mostly with sound and architecture, but has also made installations and video as well as performance. His work has been shown. Le Magasin, Grenoble (France, 1994), Confort Modern, Poitiers (France, 2001), Museum Z33, Hasselt (Belgium, 2002), Neuer Aachener Kunstverein (Germany, 2003), Ctrl_Alt_Del 1, 2 & 3 Istanbul , 2007), Pause / Oboro Gallery, Montreal (2004) and OCA / ISP Oslo (2004), Experimental Intermedia, New York (2006), Laptopia # 4, Tel Aviv (2007), Digital Media, Valencia Charlottenborg, Copenhagen and Bureau Europa'Panels', Maastricht (2010).
