I Yuko Mohris skulpturelle installasjon I/O beveger papirruller seg sakte, og plukker opp støv og andre partikler fra gallerirommet. Disse særskilte partiklene fester seg til rullene, som deretter skannes og konverteres til tilfeldige elektroniske input-output signaler.

‍I/O ble stilt ut på Atelier Nord i Oslo i 2021, men på grunn av pandemien kunne ikke kunstneren installere verket personlig. Det å familiarisere seg med det spesifikke gallerirommets egenskaper er en viktig del av dette verket, og i Bergen har Mohri gjort seg kjent med de romlige kvalitetene på Lydgalleriet under monteringen. I/O vokser dermed med omgivelsene og omstendighetene, og skaper en organisk situasjon der de samme lydene og bevegelsene aldri gjentas. I/O er et ikonisk verk som har blitt vist på ulike måter og i ulike sammenhenger – alltid nøyaktig tilpasset det spesifikke rommet det er en del av.

Yuko Mohri er en internasjonalt kjent kunstner som bor og jobber i Tokyo. Hun jobber ofte med instrumenter i sitt installasjonsarbeid og har samarbeidet med lydkunstnere og komponister som Camille Norment, Ryuichi Sakamoto og Akio Suzuki. Arbeidene hennes har blitt vist på museer og biennaler over hele verden, inkludert den 23. biennalen i Sydney, 2022; São Paulo-biennalen, 2021; Lyon Biennale, 2017 og Kochi-Muziris Biennale i 2016. Mohris verk I/O er en del av Lydgalleriets program for 2022 med fokus på ulike tilknytninger mellom menneske og maskin.

In Yuko Mohri's sculptural installation I/O, paper rolls move slowly, picking up dust and other particles from the gallery space. This particular debris attaches itself to the rollers, which then are scanned and converted to random electronic input-output signals.

I/O was exhibited at Atelier Nord in Oslo in 2021, but due to the pandemic, the artist was unable to install it in person. The acquaintance with the characteristics of a particular space is important, and this time Mohri stayed in Bergen to install the piece while familiarising with Lydgalleriet's space. I/O thus grows with the environment and circumstances, creating an organic situation in which the same sounds and movements are never repeated.

I/O is an iconic work having been shown in different ways and in different contexts - always precisely adapted to the specific room of which it is part of. I/O at Lydgalleriet will along these lines contain elements uniquely resonating with our exhibition space.

Yuko Mohri is an internationally renowned artist living and working in Tokyo. She often works with instruments in her installation work and has collaborated with sound artists and composers such as Camille Norment, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Akio Suzuki. Her works have been shown at museums and biennials around the world, including the 23rd Biennale of Sydney, 2022; the São Paulo Biennial, 2021; Lyon Biennale, 2017 and Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2016. Mohri's piece I/O is part of Lydgalleriet's program for 2022 with a focus on affiliations between human and machine.
